Gjoa Haven, NWT
Gjoa Haven, named by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, is the only settlement on King William Island in Nunavut. Amundsen landed in the area’s natural harbour during the first attempted traverse of the Northwest Passage; he ended up staying there for nearly two years, learning to live off the land from the Netsilik Inuit.
