First Air Assumes Responsibility for Site Clean-up

August 31, 2011 – Ottawa, Ontario.  First Air, today, confirms the Transportation Safety Bureau (TSB) has completed the first stage of its investigation into the cause of the tragic accident of charter flight 6560.   On Monday August 29, First Air assumed responsibility for the final stages of the 6560 Site Remediation and environmental clean-up.

“This tragic event is being felt in Resolute Bay and throughout the entire North.  First Air is committed to cleaning-up the site in a way that is respectful to the community and the environment,” said Scott Bateman, President and CEO, First Air.  “As a company that is entrenched in all the communities we serve, we recognize and acknowledge the importance of returning the site to its former state in a timely manner.”

First Air has enlisted the help of Water Earth Science Associates Limited, Atco Group and the local Hunters and Trappers Organization, to assist and consult during the clean-up.  The site clean-up plan has been approved by the Government of Nunavut, GNWT and Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada.  In addition, government inspectors are onsite to oversee the process.

“First Air is determined to ensure environmental standards and best practices are met as we work to return the land to its original condition,” said Bateman.
